History of Grama Panchayat
There is no consensus among historians regarding the origin of the place name Kuravilangad. One opinion is that the forest of the Koravelans became 'Koravelanad' and that it later became Kuravilangad. The earliest Anchal seal is cited as evidence for this opinion, with the word 'Koravilangad' added. There is another opinion that Kuravilangad became Kuravilangad. There are those who believe that 'Kuravu Elakad', which was west of Elakad, which was Cardamom, became Kuravilangad. However, linguists who research place names and the relationship between the Malayalam language and Tamil, have a different opinion. They believe that the Tamil word 'Ellakode', which means a high place, became Elakad, and that Kurua Ellakode, which is a slightly lower area than Elakad, became Kuravilangad.
Administratively, this area, which was part of the Thekkumkur kingdom, was invaded and conquered by the Venattu kings in 1749 and brought under the rule of the Travancore kingdom. The Marth Mariam Ferona Church here is a historical pilgrimage center. The three-day Lent festival in this church, which was established in 345 AD, is very famous. The Christian community, which is a majority of the population, has a prominent place in the image of this country. There is a legend that the Brahmin families of Kalli, Kalikavu, Pakalomattom and Shankarapuri, who were villagers of Palayur and who converted to Christianity from the apostle Marthoma, arrived in Kuravilangad in the first century AD and were allotted land from the Devaswom to build houses and cultivate this place, which was then owned by the Ettumanoor Devaswom. With the help and cooperation of the Ettumanoor Devaswom, the Brahmins and the middlemen in these areas, the Nasranis made great progress in the agricultural sector.
The life of the people of this area in the early centuries was a prime example of community harmony and unity. A prime example of the religious harmony that the Hindu Nasranis communities continued to maintain is that on the third day of the month of Noyamba, an elephant was sent for a circumambulation from the Ettumanoor Mahadeva temple of the Marth Mariam church in Kuravilangad and pearl umbrellas were sent from the church for the festival in the temple. Rev. Father Nidhirikkal Manikkathanar, who was the vicar of this church, was the first chief editor of the Malayalam daily newspaper 'Nasranis Deepika'. Rev. Father Nidhirikkal Manikkathanar, who made valuable contributions in the field of education and literature, is forever unforgettable in the cultural history of Kuravilangad. The Kalikavu Devi Temple, which is over 2000 years old, the very ancient Kozha Narasimhaswamy Temple, Kozha Mallapalli Kavu, Vettakkoro Makan Temple, Balasubrahmanya Swamy Temple, Mahadevar Temple, Chalappally Sree Krishnaswamy Temple, Areekkal Mahadev Temple Kalathur, Kristuraja Palli Jayagiri, and Nazareth Hill Church are the major places of worship in this area. There is a 'Muniyara' at Avanakuzhi in the panchayat that attracts tourists.
The main religious groups are Christians and Hindus. The first Malayalam school in Kuravilangad panchayat was started in the Araackal building of the Nidhiyirikal family in Kozha. There are people in this village who keep the couplets of folk songs like Koithu Pattu, Thottam Pattu, Marga Kalipattu in their minds and who have practiced folk art forms like Kolkali, Kaduva Kali, Kalaripayattu.
Two institutions, T.D. Devasya Memorial, Kuravilangad Panchayat Library, and Panchayathu Samskari Nilayam operating in Kalathur, are functioning under the control of the village panchayat. Festivals and other festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm in all the temples and other churches. The ritual arts and Kavadi Yattam performed in connection with the festivals at the Subrahmanya Swamy Temple are very attractive. There are about five public libraries functioning in our panchayat.
